How to Use Witness

1. New WitnessID Registration

Just downloaded Witness? You can start capturing in under 30 seconds. When prompted "No WitnessID found", select "No, create new".

1. Enter a WitnessID. This is your unique ID in the Witness application (minimum 10 characters Aa-Zz, 0-9, dash '-', underscore '_' are valid)
2. Enter your Email.
3. Enter your Name.
4. Tap Start Capturing. This will complete the WitnessID registration and then register your device.

Once the device registration is complete, you'll be prompted to grant requested permissions (Camera, Microphone) and then you can start to capture and verify content immediately.

You will receive an email at the address you provided. Click the link in the email to verify your WitnessID.

2. Recover Account

If you have previously created a WitnessID and see the prompt "No WitnessID found", select "Yes, I have one".

1. Enter the WitnessID you registered with.
2. Tap Send Recovery Email.
3. Check your email and click the 'Recover my account' button in the email then return to the app and click "I've clicked the link" button
4. This will complete the WitnessID recovery process and register your device.

Once the device registration is complete, you'll be prompted to grant requested permissions (Camera, Microphone) and then you can start to capture and verify content immediately.

3. Capture Content

• Witness always starts in Video mode. Tap the capture button to record, then tap the red stop button to end.
• Tap the mode switch to select Photo mode and capture still images.
• Tap the camera icon (top right) to switch between front and rear cameras.
• Witness will not verify media captured outside the app — only content recorded through Witness can be verified.

⚠️ Use Witness as your camera to ensure all captures are cryptographically signed.

🔎 How to Check Authenticity

In the Gallery, tap any photo or video to open it. Look at the badge in the top-right:

• Fully verified: The media passed all integrity and authenticity checks.
• Partially verified: Validation succeeded locally, but full verification couldn't complete (e.g., offline).
• Failed verification: The media or metadata failed one or more checks.

For full details, long-press the item and choose Show security info. You'll see these checks:

If verification fails, you may see FAIL with details, or "Reel Human JSON metadata not found in this file."

Tip: The Content Signature and Device Signature checks matter most — they prove your media hasn't been tampered with and came from your device.

4. Manage & Share Content

• To share a verified photo or video, long-press it in Gallery → select Share File.
• To delete content, long-press and select Delete File. Deletion is available only for app media, not external folders.

5. Security and Privacy

Witness does not upload or store your captures. All verification data stays inside your media files. You control what to keep or share.

Witness issues secure certificates based on your device's integrity and keeps your authenticity proof portable and private.

6. Delete Your Account

You can permanently delete your Witness account directly from the app.

1. Open Settings in the Witness app.
2. Scroll to the bottom and tap Delete My Account.
3. Confirm the deletion when prompted.

After confirming, you'll be signed out and receive a confirmation email. Your account will remain disabled for 30 days — you can sign into the Dashboard during that time if you want it be restored. Accounts not re-enabled within 30 days are permanently deleted.
